Modern materials introduced in the early 19th and 20 centuries revolutionised the modern building industry but these new mortars were not suitable for historic buildings. Although cement mortar is suited to modern buildings, it can cause damage to older buildings. In many cases, the skill of preparing and using lime mortar has been lost over the years.
