Cracked brickwork can be worrying, especially when cracks keep growing, appear around windows and doors or start to let water into the property. Birmingham Repointing provides specialist cracked brickwork repair across Birmingham, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Lichfield, Tamworth, Sutton Coldfield and the surrounding areas, using experienced diagnosis and proven repair methods to stabilise walls and restore your brickwork.
Whether you are dealing with step cracks, diagonal cracks above openings, cracks in gables or localised movement in older brickwork, we focus on permanent, sympathetic repairs rather than temporary patching. Our work combines Helibar crack stitching, Helibeam reinforcement where needed, brick and mortar colour matching and careful making-good so repairs blend in wherever possible.

What Causes Cracked Brickwork?
Cracks in brickwork can develop for a range of reasons, from minor movement and shrinkage to more serious issues such as ground movement, lintel failure or past repairs using the wrong materials.
Common causes include:
-
Movement around windows, doors, bays and gables.
-
Ground movement, settlement or local subsidence.
-
Failed or undersized lintels above openings.
-
Weathering, water ingress and freeze–thaw cycles.
-
Hard cement mortar over softer lime mortar on older buildings.
-
Poor quality previous repairs that have not addressed the root cause.
Our first step is always to inspect the cracking properly so we can identify the likely cause, assess the severity and recommend a repair that is appropriate to the building rather than applying the same solution everywhere.

Helibar and Helibeam Systems
We use Helibar and Helibeam-style systems as part of our cracked brickwork repair work to strengthen and stabilise masonry where needed.
Helibars
Helibars are 1-metre helical stainless-steel bars installed into prepared mortar joints and bedded in specialist resin. They are mainly used for general wall strengthening and smaller brick or wall repairs, such as stitching step cracks or diagonal cracks around windows and doors to help prevent further movement.
Helibeams
For larger issues such as lintel failure or more serious wall cracks, we use a longer helical coil and cut it to the required length, typically 4–5 metres, depending on the span and wall layout. We make a deeper cut into the mortar bed, then install the coil in stages – a length of coil, then resin, then the next length and more resin – to create a reinforced beam within the masonry.
At the end of the installation, we make good the joint and tint the mortar to match the original colour as closely as possible so the repair blends with the surrounding brickwork. This approach provides discreet structural reinforcement without the need for more intrusive rebuilding in many situations.

Who We Work With for Crack Repairs
We regularly work directly for homeowners who are concerned about cracks in their brickwork, but we also carry out repairs that are guided by reports or recommendations from:
-
Councils and housing providers.
-
Structural engineers.

If you already have a structural engineer’s report or building survey highlighting cracking or lintel issues, we can work through the findings with you and provide a repair proposal and quotation based on that document.

Our Cracked Brickwork Repair Process
1. Inspection and diagnosis
We start with a site visit to inspect the cracks, check both sides where possible and understand the property’s construction and history. This allows us to identify the likely cause and whether any further investigation is needed.
2. Explaining your options
Once we understand what is happening, we explain your options in plain language – from localised Helibar stitching and brick replacement through to deeper Helibeam reinforcement where cracks are linked to lintel or structural issues. We will always be honest about whether a simple repair is suitable or whether further professional input is advisable.
3. Carrying out the repair
We carefully cut slots in the mortar joints and install helical bars or coils with specialist resin as required, replace or repair damaged bricks and complete any associated mortar repairs. Throughout, we use tools and methods designed to minimise dust and disruption, and keep the work area as clean as possible.
4 Finishing and colour matching
After the structural repair is complete, we repoint or make good the joints and tint mortar where needed so the repair blends with the existing brickwork. Our aim is always to leave the wall stable and the repair as discreet as practicable.
5 Clear, written quotation and communication
Before work begins, you will receive a written quote setting out the recommended repairs and costs. We keep you updated during the job, explain what we are doing and why, and are happy to answer questions at each stage.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is brickwork crack repair?
Brickwork crack repair involves identifying the cause of the cracking and then stabilising the masonry with an appropriate method, such as Helibar crack stitching, deeper Helibeam reinforcement, brick replacement and mortar repairs, so that the wall is structurally sound and looks neat once the work is completed.
Are all cracks in brickwork structural?
No. Some fine cracks or hairline lines can be cosmetic, but others – especially step cracks, diagonal cracks from corners of windows and doors, or wide gaps – can indicate movement or lintel issues. A proper inspection is the safest way to understand what is happening and choose the right repair.
How do Helibars and Helibeams help?
Helibars are shorter helical bars used for general crack stitching and localised wall strengthening. Helibeams use longer coils installed in deeper slots to create a reinforced beam within the wall, which is especially useful where cracks are linked to lintel failure or more serious wall movement. Both are designed to stabilise the masonry and help prevent further cracking.
Can you work from a structural engineer’s report or building survey?
Yes. If you have a report from a structural engineer, building surveyor, council survey or insurance survey that highlights cracking or lintel issues, we can work through it with you and provide a repair proposal and quotation based on those findings.
Do you work on older properties with lime mortar?
Yes. We regularly work on older and historic properties built in lime mortar and understand the importance of using compatible materials and methods, rather than simply covering old lime with hard cement mortar.
Which areas do you cover for cracked brickwork repair?
We cover Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Lichfield, Tamworth, Sutton Coldfield and many surrounding areas across the West Midlands, including Solihull, Bromsgrove, Halesowen and Kidderminster.
If you have cracks in your brickwork and are not sure how serious they are, book a free, no-obligation survey. We will inspect the cracks, explain what is happening in clear terms and recommend the most suitable repair options for your property, along with a transparent written quotation.
